Subliminal VERDON…

Another GORGEOUS day....oh boy !....We leave the beautiful city of Nice(Nice is nice...) and head out into the hills like Napoleon did when he returned from exile....
We will follow Route Napoleon for a bit untill we get to the Gorges du Verdon...once again enjoy the scenery but keep your eyes on the road as well...all twisty and very narrow at places.....
After the gorges we will head for the Camargue(home of the wild horses....
The beautiful delta of the river Rhone....scenery for great painters as Van Gogh, Chagall and Sezanne.
We end in Arles, a typical example of a small French town.

And ? Was your eyes deep enough ?

  ON THE ROAD

GORGES du VERDON
This immense and magnificent canyon straddles the departments of Var and the Alpes de Hautes Provence. The gigantic cliffs of calcareous rock are the result of the erosion of the Verdon river.  In the midst of a nature reserve, rich in flora and fauna, the scenery here is astonishing. There is no doubt that the sight is imposing! The custodial villages nestled at the foot of the fault have maintained their old fashioned Provençal appeal.

Intentional flood of the Sainte-Croix-du-Verdon basin gave birth to the Sainte-Croix lake in 1975. Ruins of the old Salles-du-Verdon village lay down on the bottom of the lake where older inhabitants left forever their dearest memories. Blue turquoise waters lake is surrounded by Valensole and Canjuers plateaux, emerald green waters of the Verdon river flow into lake at the downstream end of the Grand Canyon.

PROVENCE

“After God had created and arranged the sun, earth, mountains and seas, he still had a little of each left over. He put this all together to create a paradise and so it was, that Provence came to be.”  This little corner of paradise is intoxicating with its perfumes, flavours and colours, the cheerful hubbub of its markets, the song of the cicada and the howl of the mistral wind. The town of Arles, known as “the Rome of the Gauls” has proudly preserved its amphitheatre and Roman theatre.

ARLES
Founded by the Greeks in 600 BC, Arles then became ‘little Rome’. Roman remains include a remarkably intact arena, baths, theatre and a vast necropolis. But this compact city on the Rhône is perhaps best known for its colourful houses and winding streets, depicted in so many of Van Gogh’s canvases during his prolific period here. The excellent Van Gogh Trail is marked by plaques embedded in the footpaths.
Arles: great wealth of antique and Roman heritage, with UNESCO World Heritage monuments, including the Amphitheatre (the bullring), the Roman theatre, the Church of St Trophime and its cloister, the Constantine Baths, etc. The city is listed as a "City of Art and History.
